Page 1 of 3 In this first article of the series, we are looking at choosing a web hosting company.
This at first may seem like a pointless article given the number of hosting companies available, however this fact makes this article all the more important.
99% of web hosting companies compete on price. Web site hosting can be had from as little as £1 a month, or less! But exactly what can you expect for your money? Or more importantly what should you expect for your money?
If you are setting up a web based business, how important is it to you that your business/website is online 100% of the time? 99% uptime could potentially render your site unavailable for 7 1/2 hours.
Whilst some companies offer a refund if they fail to meet their SLA (Service Level Agreement) what use is a refund of a few pounds if your site is offline for a day or two? For a few extra pounds every month you could save yourself much more in the long run.
A handy way to check a hosting companies uptime is to ask them if they have any uptime graphs - most reputable hosts will only be to happy to provide these to you - some even have links to external companies, such as Alertra whom they pay to monitor and audit their server uptimes.
Remember that as a potential customer you should find out as much about your new MAJOR supplier before commiting your business to their expertise.
