Complaint upheld
The advertisers said they were recruiting people for management positions. They explained that candidates who passed a two-part interview process joined the training programme. The advertisers said those who completed the training, by selling at least 100 bottles of perfume within six weeks, were given management positions. They sent a copy of the confirmation letter sent to candidates who had been accepted into the training programme, which stated that trainees were paid commission only. The Authority was concerned that the advertisers did not send documentary evidence to show they had management positions available or that management trainees earned a basic salary of £18,000. It considered that the advertisement misleadingly implied successful candidates would receive a salary of £18,000 while they were training. It told the advertisers to amend the advertisement to make clear that trainees were paid commission only and to ensure that, in future, they held documentary evidence to show that advertised vacancies were genuine and quoted salaries were accurate.
