Complaint:

Objection to a direct mailing, for a homework scheme, which was headlined "LOOKING FOR WELL PAID WORK AT HOME?"

and continued "An Impressive Income For You Right Now! Work In Your SpareTime Sending Us Filled Envelopes. Simply Follow Our Plan And We''ll Show You How We Can Pay Homeworkers £500 Per Week - New And Now Easier Than Ever! ... We pay you at the generous rate of £500+ for every 100 envelopes ... Starting with us will earn you real money, real money for genuine work that our business needs ... In order for you to get started immediately, please complete the application form overleaf and send it back to us as soon as possible. We will require a small fully refundable DEPOSIT of £25.00 - this covers our considerable expenses in administering and send you your starter pack and guarantees you can independently work for as long as you wish, it shows you are not a ''time waster'' and are really serious about working from home ... As soon as you have earned your first £50 in commission ... we guarantee to REFUND in full your registration deposit plus an additional £25 new-starter bonus!". The complainant challenged whether:

1. genuine work was available, and

2. the advertisers issued refunds.

The Authority challenged the claims:

3. "We pay you at the generous rate of £500+ for every 100 envelopes", and

4. "£500 per week".

Codes Section: 2.6, 3.1, 7.1, 52.4 (Ed 11)

Adjudication:

Complaint upheld
The advertisers did not respond to the Authority''s enquiries. The Authority was concerned by the advertisers'' lack of response to the issues raised, which it considered a breach of the Codes. The Authority reminded the advertisers of their responsibility to respond to its enquiries and asked them to do so promptly in future. Because they had not substantiated the advertised claims, the Authority told the advertisers to stop the mailings and asked the Committee of Advertising Practice to advise its members of the problem with the advertisers.
