Complaint:

Objection to a regional press advertisement that was headed "HOMEWORKERS WANTED NATIONWIDE" and claimed "Homeworkers wanted for assembling, craftwork, packing, addressing/mailing, proofreading, writing, phonework, typing, manual, clerical and agency work. No experience required, all ages.

Excellent pay rates. Thousands of genuine vacancies. PART-TIME OR FULL TIME JOB OFFER GUARANTEED ...". The complainant, who responded to the advertisement and was sent information about business and employment opportunities but not vacancies, objected that the advertisement misleadingly implied the advertisers offered employment.

Codes Section: 3.1, 7.1, 52.2, 52.7 (Ed 11)

Adjudication:

Complaint upheld
The advertisers said the advertisement was for a directory of opportunities. They said they sent respondents a 50-page advice book on homeworking, as well as the directory. The advertisers said they would amend the advertisement to claim "Firms looking for home-workers", because they did not offer employment themselves. The Authority considered that the advertisement misleadingly implied it was for employment by the advertisers. The Authority noted the complainant had been asked to send money to the advertisers before the directory was sent to him. It reminded the advertisers that advertisements for the sale of directories giving details of employment or business opportunities should indicate plainly the nature of what was being offered. The Authority told the advertisers to amend the advertisement with help from the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) Copy Advice team.
