A. C. Entertainment Suite 501 International House 223 Regent Street London W12 QD Complaint:
Objection to a magazine advertisement, for casting extras, that was headed "A.C.E Casting Extras" and claimed "A.C.E. Castings are looking for new artist [sic.] to join our books for 2004 absolutely FREE.
We are looking for artist [sic.] to supply to films, soaps, dramas, music videos and commercial advertisements ... NO REGISTRATION FEES - NO ANNUAL FEES. NO INTERVIEW!!! Call Today for FREE Registration [telephone number] (Callers please ask permission before using phone, calls cost ?1.50 per min average calls 60sec max)". The complainant challenged whether:
1. the advertisement charged readers for information about the advertised employment, because they had to call a premium-rate number for more information and
2. the advertisers could substantiate the implication that they could find employment in films, soaps, dramas, music videos and commercial advertisements for those registered with them.
Codes Section: 2.6, 3.1, 6.1, 7.1, 52.2, 52.3 (Ed 11)
Adjudication:
Complaint upheld The advertisers did not respond in writing to the Authority''s enquiries, despite giving their assurance in a telephone conversation that they would. The Authority was concerned by the advertisers'' lack of response to the complaint and apparent disregard for the Code. Because they had not proved they did not charge for more information or that they could provide employment, the Authority told the advertisers to withdraw the advertisement. It reminded them of their responsibility to hold substantiation to support advertised claims and to respond promptly to the Authority''s requests for information. The Authority asked CAP to inform its media members of the problem with the advertisers. |
